Plano, TX- The U.S. Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the City of Balch Springs regarding a religious discrimination case involving the bilingual church, Templo La Fe Worship Center.
“It is great to have a Justice Department that cares about religious freedom,” said Hiram Sasser, Director of Litigation with Liberty Legal Institute.
On Wednesday, June 23, 2004, Templo La Fe Worship Center and its attorneys held a press conference to announce a lawsuit being filed against the City of Balch Springs. The lawsuit comes months after a demand letter was sent asking the City to reverse their decision and allow the Church to build their church building on property purchased in 1997.
“It’s amazing that the same four City Council members who refused the seniors the right to pray are now telling a Church they can’t exist,” said Kelly Shackelford, Chief Counsel with Liberty Legal Institute. “We are really encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice is already taking action on yet another violation of religious freedom.”
This is the second time the Justice Department has opened an investigation into the City for religious discrimination in a year.”
