Balch Springs Senior Citizen to Testify at Senate Hearing in Washington, D.C.

Plano, TX- In Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, a Senate Committee will hear testimony from Barney Clark, a Balch Springs Senior Citizen and Kelly Shackelford, Chief Counsel with Liberty Legal Institute. Both gentlemen have been invited by a Senate Committee to testify on religious freedom.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with government officials to increase their awareness of situations taking place around our country endangering our religious freedoms,” said Shackelford. “It is an honor to be invited to provide this testimony to our U.S. Senators and the country.”

Barney Clark and his wife have been longtime members of the Balch Springs Senior Center. They were involved in a lawsuit against the City of Balch Springs, which they recently won. The controversy arose when the Clarks and other members were told by the City that they could no longer sing gospel music, pray, or have inspirational messages presented at the Senior Center. Liberty Legal Institute was instrumental in overturning the City’s policy and reclaiming religious freedom for the Senior Citizens.

“Mr. Clark is a war veteran and fought for his freedoms. He is a great example of a hero who not only fought for our freedoms in World War II, but continues to stand for our freedoms today. His testimony should be powerful” said Shackelford.

The Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution is chaired by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). The Committee will conduct the hearing on Tuesday, June 8 at 2 p.m. EST in the Senate Dirksen Office Building Room 226. The hearing is entitled, “Beyond the Pledge of Allegiance: Hostility to Religious Expression in the Public Square.”
