DOJ Opens Investigation into City of Terrell

Plano, TX- The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has now opened an investigation into the City of Terrell. The preliminary investigation includes the DOJ obtaining information from the City concerning its policies and practices regarding religious activity on City-owned property, including the Kaufman County YMCA.

“We appreciate the diligent efforts of the Justice Department to investigate religious discrimination in the City of Terrell and look forward to a resolution,” said Brad Lamberth, lead attorney on the case.

A lawsuit was filed against the City in March by Liberty Legal Institute on behalf of Pastor Michael Feltis and his church, Purpose Life Church. The reason for the lawsuit was due to the City’s policy prohibiting churches from using city-owned buildings. Purpose Life Church was told that they could not hold voluntary and non-disruptive church activities at the Kaufman County YMCA.
