Dallas Native Harriet Miers Withdraws Nomination to U.S. Supreme Court

Plano, TX- Lawyers at Liberty Legal Institute in Texas react to this morning’s announcement that Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.

“This ends a very difficult time for a number of people, often pitting friends against each other,” said Hiram Sasser, director of litigation for Liberty Legal Institute. “We will now be able to move past this nomination and most likely unite those all across the country who believe in a proper judicial philosophy.”

Miers was nominated by President Bush to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor earlier this month. Since then, she has been under heavy scrutiny for not having any public records showing her political, moral or social views. This lack of information resulted in a mix of opinions and no clear consensus viewpoint from conservatives across the country.

“The silver lining of the difficult last few weeks is that we may have now ended the whole stealth approach to judicial nominees forever. Hopefully, this will be a good thing for our country and we can learn a lesson that in the future a nominee must have a consistent judicial record,” said Kelly Shackelford, chief counsel for Liberty Legal Institute.

As announced this morning, President Bush has accepted the withdrawal of Miers’ nomination and will begin his deliberation for another nominee immediately.

“Fortunately, President Bush has a great group of wonderful judges with a solid judicial philosophy and distinguished judicial records showing they can withstand the pressure and act as a judge, not a legislator,” Shackelford said.
