Plano, TX- Today, a federal judge heard preliminary arguments in the S.W.A.T. v. Plano ISD Case. S.W.A.T., Students Witnessing Absolute Truth, asked the judge to require Plano ISD to stop its religious discrimination of the officially recognized, student-led religious group.
"The student group is currently not being treated equally to other student clubs," said Hiram Sasser, director of litigation for Liberty Legal Institute.
The preliminary injunction hearing was held today at the United States District Court, Eastern District of Texas, Sherman Division. This is the first step in the litigation process of the case.
"Student groups must have equal access to the same opportunities, including a website posting and staff sponsor," Sasser said.
This is the second religious freedom lawsuit filed against Plano ISD. It resulted when an organizational description of S.W.A.T. was removed from a listing of non-curricular clubs on the district website.
"We are encouraged by the hearing today, and we remain steadfast in our battle to guarantee the continued protection of religious freedom on Plano ISD campuses," Sasser said.
