Judge Grants Temporary Restraining Order against Katy ISD

Plano, TX- A judge of the 133rd Harris County District Court granted the temporary restraining order (TRO) against Katy Independent School District moments ago, protecting the children's right to bring religious-themed valentines to a class party on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

"We are very pleased with the judge's decision to uphold the Constitution and grant the students the right to express their religious beliefs without discrimination," said Kelly Shackelford, chief counsel for Liberty Legal Institute. "A TRO is a severe remedy, but unfortunately it was necessary because of the extreme violations by the district."

The parents and the children, whose free speech rights were violated, filed for the TRO to ensure that the students could hand out religious-themed gifts to friends at the Valentine's Day party. The TRO coincided with a lawsuit, Pounds et. al. v. Katy ISD, filed against the district for years of continued religious censorship against students.
