City of Plano Mashes Cross in Dirt

Plano, TX- The Plano-based religious liberties group, Liberty Legal Institute, is filing a demand letter against the City of Plano today on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Hawley of Plano. The City has physically overturned bricks donated by the Hawley family and other families to the Recreation Center sidewalk simply because they displayed Christian crosses.

“Nothing says Merry Christmas like digging up a donated brick with a Cross, turning it over, and pushing it into the dirt, said Hiram Sasser, Director of Litigation for Liberty Legal Institute.

Mr. and Mrs. Hawley bought three bricks for the sidewalk of Muehlenbeck Recreation Center in spring of 2007 as a part of a fundraiser. In the fundraiser, individuals and families were asked to purchase bricks and inscribe personal messages. However, after the bricks were put in place, the City of Plano uprooted and overturned each brick displaying a Cross and replaced the brick face down.

“Plano is blatantly violating the Constitution by engaging in such hostile religious cleansing and censorship,” said Sasser.

In today’s demand letter, the Hawley family is demanding that the City of Plano return all the bricks to their original position.
