Supreme Court Gun Case: Expert's Brief Blames Gun Ban for Suzanna Hupp's Tragedy

Who/What: The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in District of Columbia vs. Dick Anthony Heller will have an emotional and purposeful impact on one amicus filer—former Texas state representative Dr. Suzanna Hupp. Kelly Shackelford, Chief Counsel for Liberty Legal Institute and constitutional expert, filed an amicus brief on behalf of Suzanna, whose parents were killed by a wild gunman in a Texas diner in 1991.

Quote: Liberty Legal’s brief states that during the incident, “Dr. Hupp’s first thought was her .38 caliber revolver which she had been forced to leave in the car due to the restrictive gun laws then in effect.”

Topics of Discussion: Kelly Shackelford, Chief Counsel for Liberty Legal Institute, is a leading expert on constitutional law, including freedom of religion, expression and the right to bear arms. Shackelford has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, and last year won two landmark cases before the Texas Supreme Court involving the First Amendment and religious liberty. His amicus argues that the D.C. gun ban would be equivalent to an outright ban on all First Amendment freedoms.
