Liberty Institute was founded as Free Market Foundation in 1972 as a 501(c)(3) non- profit organization dedicated to protecting freedoms and strengthening families.
What began in a garage apartment in Plano, Texas, nearly 40 years ago, has grown into an influential public policy and non-profit legal organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of traditional family values and Constitutional freedoms.
We added our legal division, once known as Liberty Legal Institute, in 1997. Today, we employ a team of experienced full-time Constitutional attorneys and also work with many volunteer attorneys who donate their time to help in our mission of protecting freedoms and strengthening families. Some of our recent cases include representing all of the major veterans groups in the high-profile Mojave Desert Cross case and helping defend Hannah Giles, the "undercover" journalist who videotaped ACORN's corruption for a national audience.
In 2008, we expanded our efforts and opened our first satellite office in Austin, Texas, to have more influence in helping pass bills that favor traditional values and to stop those which would harm those values. Although much of our legislative advocacy focuses on Texas, where we have our roots, our work often has national impact as other states use us as a model in drafting and passing family values legislation such the Texas Marriage Amendment. We are also concerned with public policy on the national level that impacts families and limits freedoms. We are dedicated to keeping our supporters informed on these issues through regular alerts and connected to their elected officials through our online action center.
Although our name has changed, our steadfast dedication to family and freedoms is the same. We remain committed to fighting for pro-family, pro-life and pro-freedom values through the courts, legislature, grassroots and media.
